James M. Ellis Jr.
Jim was a passionate fire fighter and began his career at the age of 16 as a volunteer in Mars, PA, now known as the Adams Area Fire District. He later served on the Board of the Fire District and was a key member in apparatus designs, training, and the new Fire Headquarters. Jim continued his passion for the fire service by following it as a career path, first serving three years in Wilkinsburg, and finishing off his career with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire where he became a well-respected and renowned Captain. His last assignment was as a Captain at 32 Engine/Truck in the Northside of Pittsburgh. He also served 25 years with the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, 171 Air Refueling Wing, some of that time as Fire Chief. Jimmy was a PA State Suppression Instructor teaching many courses locally as well as a well-known Instructor on the National Circuit teaching with various training groups at places like FDIC, FDTN, and more. Jimmy passed away on July 13th, 2022 after illness. Jimmy was a fireman’s fireman, a humble mentor of the fire service. A devoted and passionate leader who ensured the well-being and progress of everyone in his presence. Jimmy’s calling was to pass on the knowledge of the fire service that was instilled upon him to ensure everyone was better than yesterday.
Purpose
The Jimmy Ellis Firefighter Foundation was formed on February 18th, 2023 with the founding Board Members being Cathy Ellis (wife), Dave More, Danny Doyle, Bill Hayes, and Jason Safreed. The Foundation set out on a mission to provide awareness to the importance of training and has the objective to fund scholarships in effort to help firefighters achieve their training goals. The foundation honors Jimmy’s passion for this job and training by providing opportunity for firefighters to be able to attend larger training conferences such as FDIC, FDTN, and more.
